Born and raised in a refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, Izzeldin Abuelaish grew up surrounded by poverty, displacement, and conflict. Despite these hardships, he excelled in school and dreamed of becoming a doctorโa healer in a place of suffering.
๐ The Journey to Medicine
Breaking barriers, he studied medicine in Cairo and later trained in London and Harvard. He became a leading gynecologist and infertility expert, often working in both Israeli and Palestinian hospitalsโbelieving medicine should bridge divides.
๐ A Personal Tragedy
In 2009, during the Gaza War, tragedy struck. An Israeli shell hit his home, killing three of his daughters and a niece. Instead of responding with hatred, Izzeldin chose forgiveness and peace. His reaction stunned the world: he called for reconciliation, not revenge.
โ๏ธ A New Life in Canada
Later that year, Izzeldin immigrated to Canada with his surviving children, taking a position as an associate professor of Global Health at the University of Toronto. Canada became not only a refuge but also a platform for his mission of peace.

In 2010, he published his memoir I Shall Not Hate, which became an international bestseller, translated into more than 20 languages. The book told his story of pain, resilience, and his belief that peace is the only path forward.

Dr. Abuelaish founded the Daughters for Life Foundation, which provides scholarships for young women from the Middle East to study in Canada and beyond. His work has touched thousands of lives, turning personal grief into a global movement for education and hope.
