When Karla Briones was a little girl in Chihuahua, Mexico, her world was filled with rhythm and movement. She trained as a semi-professional ballet dancer, dreaming of a future on stage. But life, as it often does, had other plans.
In the late 1990s, violence in her hometown forced her family to make a choice no family ever wants to face: stay and risk their safety, or leave everything behind and start over somewhere new. They chose Canada.
The move was not easy. In Mexico, Karla’s father was a respected veterinarian. In Canada, he was a newcomer struggling to recertify his license, navigating a system that seemed stacked against him. Karla watched him pour his savings, energy, and hope into rebuilding his practice, only to lose money and face setback after setback.
Those years left a mark on Karla. She realized something profound: immigrant entrepreneurs often fail not because they lack talent or ambition, but because they lack guidance and access to the hidden rules of the system.

She launched Karla Briones Consulting, a firm dedicated to coaching immigrant entrepreneurs. Her focus wasn’t just on writing business plans or teaching marketing strategies—it was about unlocking confidence, navigating cultural differences, and making sure no one felt as lost as her father once did.
She expanded her reach further, working with Invest Ottawa, The Indigenous Business Hub, and teaching entrepreneurship at Algonquin College. Each new role widened her circle of impact. Karla wasn’t just building her own success—she was building pathways for others.
