🌴 Roots in Grenada
Born in 1937 in St. George’s, Grenada, Jean Augustine grew up in modest circumstances after losing her father at an early age. Raised by her mother, she learned resilience, faith, and the value of education. Those lessons became the foundation of her future success.

✈️ A New Life in Canada
In 1960, Jean immigrated to Canada as part of the West Indian Domestic Scheme, arriving in Toronto to work as a nanny and domestic worker. Life wasn’t easy—she faced racism, isolation, and financial struggles. But Jean refused to let her circumstances define her.

📚 The Power of Education
She pursued higher education while working multiple jobs, eventually earning a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Education from the University of Toronto. Jean later became an elementary school principal—breaking barriers for women of color in Canadian education.

🚀 Breaking Barriers in Politics
In 1993, Jean Augustine made history by becoming the first Black woman elected to the House of Commons. She went on to serve as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister, Minister of State for Multiculturalism and the Status of Women, and Deputy Speaker of the House.

One of her proudest achievements was introducing the motion that established February as Black History Month in Canada—a milestone in Canadian cultural recognition.

🌍 Her Lasting Legacy
Jean’s impact goes beyond politics. She created scholarships, supported women’s organizations, and continues to mentor young leaders. In 2009, the Jean Augustine Chair in Education, Community & Diaspora was established at York University in her honor.
